Câu hỏi về Tiếng Anh (Mỹ)
Nói câu này trong Tiếng Anh (Mỹ) như thế nào? Let’s say for instance, you confided to a colleague about planning to quit your job but quite unsure yet. But that colleague went straight to your boss and told it himself/herself without your consent. Is that bypassing or is there another word for it?

@N-e-s-t-e-a well, actually yeah. The way you said it works really well. To steal someone’s thunder would be like to take credit for something that someone else was planning on doing. Or rather to do something someone else was planning on doing and getting all the praise for it. (It usually always refers to something positive or praise-worthy)
-Sorry about stealing your thunder, I was working with her so I shared the news with her. (I actually did “steal my brother’s thunder” just the other day by sharing the news of his engagement with my sister at work… he was planning on telling her that afternoon but he had told me that morning) anyways, I suppose you could use this phrase with your example, but it’s usually used praise-worthy things. Another example:
-I was so close to winning! But of course he had to swoop in last second and steal my thunder.
With your example, I’m not sure if there’s a very good verb/phrase you could use. You could say that the news was yours to share as in you alone had the right to give the news.
-That was my news to share. Why would you go around me and tell her? (Go around = bypass)
P.S. Thank you btw! 😊

@Nestea_Yoshii Maybe the word you are looking for is snitch.

@Salma12345 thank you for you time salma12345. what i meant was that colleague sort of stole your thunder in a way, if you will. the colleague took the liberty of telling it first rather than you. would that still be a snitch?

@Nestea_Yoshii Oh well I don’t think snitch would really fit in that context. Snitch is usually used if someone did something wrong and someone else told on them. Maybe you could say they stole the spotlight, but I don’t think that’s very accurate to what you mean. Sorry, I can’t think of a more accurate word/phrase.

@Nestea_Yoshii this literally just happened to my mom a few months ago. I would maybe say that they spilled the secret (or I suppose they “snitched”)
-They let the news of her retirement slip.
-They went behind her back and told her boss that she was planning on quitting.
-They snitched to her boss about her quitting. (This is how I would say it with “snitch”)
Yeah, there’s a few ways to say it. I think bypassing could possibly work… but now I can’t think of how I would say it with “bypass” 😅

The action is called "going behind your back" or "betraying you". "Snitched" is also correct.

You would be “usurping” her and “going over her head” - this is what my coworker said when I asked if there is like a verb or something to describe going above someone, like if I were going over my boss and talking to her boss about her… so similar in meaning. Usurping is a tiny bit formal, but perhaps you could say like “My colleague went over my head and told my boss that I was planning to quit” something like that 😅
