Hi. I've learned Vietnamese in the past and right now I'm learning Thai. Since the 2 languages don't have much in common, except for similar phonology and tones.. I was looking for way a to learn Thai the "easier" way (the more languages you know, the easier it get to learn a new language, even if the languages aren't related. There is always some advantage to it).
For example, Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean and Japanese share thousands of cognates with Vietnamese. But this is not the case with Thai. However I still could find some words in Thai (Chinese origin) that sound similar to Vietnamese.
And I'm hoping to find more 😀

That's a good one! Thanks
How was it for you to learn Thai? Did you have many struggles with learning as a Vietnamese?
I've learned Vietnamese, and it benefits me quite a lot for learning Thai.
Especially the tones, but also the sounds

@Polyglott I learned Thai by myself, so it's kind of difficult, especially the alphabet 🤣
But the grammar, sentence structure are really similar to Vietnamese, around 70%, I guess.
It's much more easier for me to learn Thai.
For me, Japanese is more difficult 😅

@Polyglott But as you said, there are not too many cognates between Thai and Vietnamese. It's so hard to remember tons of new words.
I like your method 🤟

May be they have the same etymologies or it's just a coincidence (like "cut" in English and "cắt" in Vietnamese). The origin of Vietnamese have many "mystery" and it is influenced by some old Tai-Kradai languages. Also Thai is influenced by old Khmer language (same belong to Mon-Khmer branch) and Chinese language.

I see, that makes sense. There might be many more... However the words I listed above are Thai words that derived from Chinese. Unfortunately I couldn't find more of these.
Thai has mainly Sanskrit, Pali, Khmer words and only a handful of Chinese (I think) Whereas Vietnamese has a ton of Chinese, it's fascinating 😀
