@vv00ww Ok I think I have it now. In this case, there ARE a bunch of people. Why? Because you can count how many people.
There are two people.
There are ten people.
There are one hundred thousand people.
There are a bunch of people.
What if you can't count the thing? You have to use "is" in that case.
There is a bunch of sand.
There are a bunch of grains of sand.
There is a lot of news lately.
There are a lot of news articles lately.
Please understand, most English speakers won't stop to think about this rule in everyday life so you will hear both. Written English is much more strict than spoken English.

There are a bunch of people (second one) is correct because "there is" is used when the noun is singular (“There is a cat”). Use "there are" when the noun is plural (“There are two cats”).

Thank you so much for your prompt answer. That's what I thought at first. But in the site below, some respondents say the correct sentence is "There is/was...", which made me really confused. Do you have any idea why they think so?

In the link you sent me, it is very confusing because bunch is a singular word, and to avoid the confusion i recommend that you use "a lot" when referring to people instead of "bunch"

Yes! It is very confusing, isn't it? Thank you for your great idea to use "a lot" instead of "a bunch of".

ご回答ありがとうございます。 areの方が正しいけれど、たまにThere's a bunchと言う人もいるということでしょうか。 ネイティブの方は日常会話ではあまり単数形や複数形にこだわらずに話しているのでしょうか…。
Thank you very much for your answer. What you mean is using "are" is grammatically correct but some people use "There's a bunch of..." ? I guess native English speakers don't care much about the usage of singular or plural in everyday conversation, or do they?

Thank you so much for your detailed explanation. I understand that "there ARE a bunch of people" is correct but even if you say "there IS a bunch of people" it doesn't sound like a big mistake to native speakers in daily conversation. You are right. It is true of Japanese. We don't stop to think about grammar in speaking Japanese. Thank you again for taking your time.
